KEG: 'Heyshaw'

Brighton newcomers KEG have burst forth with the eclectic energy of seven mini mad hatters, showcasing their skills with the dazzling debut single ‘Heyshaw’. Having mingled in previous bands with members of Squid and Black Country, New Road, the band are ready to cut their own path forward, having already garnered a buzzing live reputation.

Splicing the post-punk sounds that have dominated their hometown of late together with brazen, tongue-in-cheek indie rock, the song rings forth with its vibrant, clanging sound. With the same off-kilter buzz as a circus, the band exude the nerdy cool of Napoleon Dynamite as their musical accomplishments and mastery of their instruments poke their heads out. Classical jazz backgrounds manifest in boozy, bloated syncopation, which is topped by frontman Albert Haddenham’s airy, madcap vocal delivery.

Speaking about ‘Heyshaw’, Haddenham explains: "The first tune we wrote as KEG is a cheeky ditty about my mum's family, growing up on Heyshaw farm in the Yorkshire dales and various RAF camps around the world, from Nidderdale to Kuwait, Kuala Lumpur to Driffield, Whippets to Frankfurters. The culture clash must have been quite stark. Musically the track was written at the height of our collective Devo frenzy, we are indebted to our Ohio forebears."
